Crowdstrike Strikes Down Everything

A global #IToutage has left thousands stranded at airports, offices closed, and massive disruption. #Crowdstrike said the problem occurred when it deployed a faulty update to computers running Microsoft Windows.

How it all started:

Crowdstrike says the problem occurred when it deployed a faulty update to computers running Microsoft Windows, noting that the issue behind the outage was not a security incident or cyberattack. But, because scores of companies rely on CrowdStrike for their security needs with Windows as their operating system, the consequences of this kind of technical problem have been far-reaching.

How is it that most major companies run on ONE platform?

People were stranded at the airport for DAYS! While most airlines were able to readjust and pivot to rebooking customers on different flights, Delta was down far longer .. 5 days! Microsoft commented that delaying modernization efforts were to blame for their slow recovery. As a result, Delta’s COO, Mike Spanos, left the company.

Even huge billboards in Times Square went dark.

American Express said it temporarily had some difficulties processing transactions, while TD Bank responded to online complaints by saying it was working to restore customers’ ability to access their accounts.

Other minor inconveniences were long lines and no mobile ordering.

What is CrowdStrike?

CrowdStrike is a U.S. cybersecurity company that provides software to companies around the world and across industries. It bills itself as being the globe’s most advanced cloud-based security technology provider.

Though the outage’s impact could be felt far and wide, the forecasting firm Capital Economics said it was likely to have little impact on the world economy.
